Description: This hardy species of evergreen bamboo is tends to clump rather than run, and is well suited to the home garden. Slow-growing to form a dense clump of erect, dark purple-green culms. Height 15 feet;spread 5 feet.
Notes: Seed is rarely available and requires a certain amount of skill to germinate.
Cultivation: Gibberellic acid treatment may greatly enhance germination rates. Sow seed in spring or early autumn in pots or modules using standard soil-less seed compost. Place under protection at 5 degrees Celsius. Cover with perlite or vermiculite. Do not allow the compost to dry out.
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive soil in partial shade with shelter from cold drying winds.
