 Ricinus communis 'Impala' |
Native Region: Egypt to Western Asia Zone Range: 09-10 Preferred Climate: Mediterranean to tropical Harvest Date: Tuesday 10 October, 2006
Notes: This evergreen tropical shrub can grow so fast that it can be used as a very large and dramatic annual in the garden. A remarkably architectural plant, it can be used to great effect in the center of island beds or at the back of large borders. All parts of this plant are toxic.
Cultivation: Sow seed in containers in the spring when you would normally start tomatoes or other tender annual plants. Soak seed for 24 hours in pure clean water and sow individually into pots of sterile growing medium. Germinate at 21ºC(70ºF) then grow on at slightly cooler temperatures. Do not allow plants to become potbound as this will result in stunted growth and premature blooms. Plant out when night temperatures do not drop much below 10ºC (50ºF). Grow on in neutral to alkaline soil with good drainage in full sun. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
