 Kirengeshoma palmata subsp. koreana |
Native Region: Japan, Korea Zone Range: 05-09 Preferred Climate: Temperate Harvest Date: Tuesday 07 November, 2006 Seed count: 40-50
Description: There is some dispute about the status of the genus; are there one or two species of Kirengeshoma? Are they separate species, subspecies or are they simply different forms?
Well, whatever the botanists eventually decide, this is a beautiful variation of this rare perennial. The stems tend to be darker and the flowers have petals that are more distinctly reflexed, giving them an altogether different look from the species type. Growing to 1m (3ft) or more in height, these plants produce their remarkable flowers at the end of summer and into the autumn.
Cultivation: Sow seed in containers in a coldframe in autumn or spring. If sowing in spring it is possible that cold stratification could help improve germination, which can be erratic. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
