Gunnera tinctoria

Native Region: Chile
Zone Range: 07-10
Preferred Climate: Sub-alpine to hot temperate
Harvest Date: Sunday 01 November, 2009
Seed count: 40-50

Description:
One of the largest perennials you are ever likely to encounter, exceeded in size only by the closely related Gunnera manicata. The leaves can grow to over 2m (6.5ft) across on stems as long. The two species may seem hard to distinguish at times, but Gunnera tinctoria has distinctively red tinged flower clusters that are tighter, narrower and shorter than Gunnera manicata.

Notes:
Originally acquired by VanDusen as Gunnera chilensis, this species is now known as Gunnera tinctoria.

Cultivation:
Sow seed in containers in a coldframe. Gentle bottom heat can improve germination, 16-20°C (60-70°F) Grow on in any good moist garden soil. Mulch the large crowns with the leaves in regions where winter temperatures are likely to drop below -5°C (20°F) A heavy mulch can help these plants survive -17°C (0°F). For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.

Harvest Date: Sunday 01 November, 2009
